About The Compassionate Closet
What we choose to do, buy, eat, and wear has an enormous impact on the environment, humans, and animals. With a growing awareness of the increase of pollution, deforestation, global warming, and resource depletion, the simplest way to help reverse these devastating effects is to adopt a vegan lifestyle. Being vegan means we make peaceful choices about what we eat, buy, do, and wear. We believe quality fashion should be created in a cruelty-free, sustainable, and responsible way.
The Compassionate Closet offers 100% vegan apparel, shoes, and accessories for men and women.
Our mission: WEAR NO HARM
Stephanie was gracious enough to take some time out of her busy day to speak with us and share a bit about her wonderful products and company.
Can you give us some background on you?
I am vegan, an animal lover, and regular volunteer at Peaceful Prairie Sanctuary. I absolutely love being a member of the plant-strong community, meeting new compassionate pioneers around every turn— from vegans, naturalists, environmentalist, straight-edge, animal lovin’, tree-huggin’, ethically conscious shoppers! I am always so inspired their stories of health, compassion, and values!
Why are you passionate about vegan fashion? And what got you into this business?
I love clothes! I love shoes, bags, belts, accessories – you name it, I have it! But one day, I realized that my closet was a cemetery! Full of wool, cashmere, leather, and silk—I was shocked and disappointed by the lifetime of cruel choices I had made and by how completely unaware I was of what my clothes were made of. So when I set out to turn over my closet (now reading every label), I quickly realized that—although there are vegan, cruelty-free, and fair-trade choices out there—you really have to search them out. That is when I decided to help bring vegan fashions to the marketplace and launch The Compassionate Closet!
Can you give some details on what some of the products are made from and how they are procured?
There is a lot of thought that goes into the products and brands that we carry. All products are vegan meaning they are made from natural or manmade materials – no animal ingredients. To find these fashions, we look for designers with the same values—ethical, sustainable, vegan, cruelty-free, and that give back—and with awesome style, of course! We look for both well-known and aspiring brands, but all brands must be trusted brands. We want to support designers that are leading the way in creating sustainable, cruelty-free fashion!
How is vegan fashion more environmentally friendly and why is it so important to support?
If you’ve seen COWSPIRACY: THE SUSTAINABILITY SECRET, then you know that animal agriculture is a leader in resource depletion and environmental degradation. And contrary to popular belief, animal skins (along with wool, fur, feathers) are not the byproduct of the meat industry. In fact, a cow’s skin can be the most profitable portion of the cow’s body. This means that leather helps make the meat industry—and animal farming—profitable, which is destroying the planet. Not to mention the victims.
The factory farming industry strives to maximize output while minimizing costs—always at the animals’ expense. Factory farms are hell on earth for the animals. They are crammed by the thousands into filthy, windowless sheds and confined to wire cages, gestation crates, barren dirt lots, and other cruel confinement systems. Most won’t even feel the sun or breathe fresh air until the day they are loaded onto trucks bound for slaughter.
The good news in all of this: Fashion can be cruelty-free, environmentally-friendly, high-quality, and look great all at the same time! In fact, many designers create sustainable fashion from recycled cotton, recycled plastic bottles and alternative materials such as hemp and tencel – sparing the lives of countless animals, saving resources, and helping to reduce the amount of products from ending up in landfills and oceans.
Our choices matter. By supporting vegan fashion, you can help counter fast, cheap and damaging patterns of fashion consumption, support social responsibility, promote energy efficiency and reduce waste, help set higher sustainability standards for fashion, and protect animals, animal rights, and their habitats.
What are some of the social justice projects we support when we buy from you?
The benefits are piled up!! Many of the products we carry support an environmental, animal, and/or humanitarian cause, such as:
- Tigerbear Replik’s F.I.G.H.T. (Feed, Inspire, Give, Help & Teach)
- All Across Africa’s fair-trade employment and income opportunities across rural, poor African countries
- The Vegan Collection’s commitment to the Kitten Rescue
- Engage Green’s Green Cycle
- The People’s Movement fight against single-use plastics
In addition to all of that, 5% of our profits go to benefit the admirable work being done for animal welfare by the people of Peaceful Prairie Sanctuary. WEAR NO HARM really means something and we want you to know every time you shop with us!
Where can we find you?
Although we’re primarily online, we are working hard to open a physical store in Colorado soon. Meanwhile, we’re making our way around to meet-ups, pop-ups, and festivals to promote and to connect with other like-minded and inspiring people.
