Doctor Michael Greger isn’t quiet when it comes to criticizing meat-based diet. He’s an M.D. who has been vegan himself for 23 years and is known worldwide for his work in nutrition and disease prevention. Unlike most high-profile M.D.s, he is not a special surgeon or oncologist. He’s a general practitioner whose specialty is nutrition. He is also the current Director of Public Health and Animal Agriculture for the Humane Society of the United States and an outspoken critic of factory farming.
Greger travels the world speaking about preventative “medicine” that people can practice on themselves by controlling their diet. His website,Nutrition Facts.org, provides free information on numerous foods and nutrients. The site includes many links to studies that indirectly and directly advocate vegan diets and focus on the scientific evidence that supports the choice to eat animal-free.
One referenced study that is critical of a meat-based diet says that meat may contribute to cancer due to industrial carcinogens that build up in the body tissue of cattle that humans consume. In his presentation referenced as “Uprooting the Leading Causes of Death” looks at another angle. Greger focuses on the fact that meat consumption causes inflammation of blood vessels, organs and connective tissue. The inflammation causes damage to the cells and requires excess cell division for constant repairs to inflammation damage. This raises the possibility of cell mutation that can lead to cancer. Inflammation also contributes to arthritis debilitating neuromuscular diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis.
Poultry, Greger said, has the highest connection to cancer, and that every 50 grams of chicken consumed can triple the risk rate for some kinds of cancer, especially fast-growing cancers such as lymphoma and leukemia during a lecture he gave in July of 2012.
“The link between meat and cancer is such that even the Journal of Meat Science last year (in 2011) asked if we should become vegetarians…” Greger said.
Many studies are even more critical of the consumption of dairy products, referenced studies said.
“Dairy consumption has been associated with an increased risk of Parkinson’s, heart attacks, colorectal cancer, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer.”
Just as dairy product consumption was linked to testicular cancer in men, it was also linked to breast cancer in women.
What happens to cancer growth rates in vegans? Greger references studies that say “the blood of a vegan has eight times the [cancer] stopping power of a meat eater.
Greger added that while exercise is important to anyone’s health, a proper diet weighs more heavily for success against cancer.
